What We've Been Up To!

August 2017
Wow what a busy and exciting summer! We are sad to see our summer students leave for another winter, but we certainly enjoyed our time with them and all the fun things that made summer great.
Our August was much busier than we are used to with some new events and activities happening.

Fibre Friday Afternoons were a huge success! We had many people, young and old, who came out to participate.
Our first session of washing wool was very busy! Who knew that washing stinky wool all afternoon would be such a popular activity.

The second session of combing and carding was very fun! Lots of people came out to help us with carrying on with the process of wool production. Lots of fun was had with our wool craft too!

For day 3 of Fibre Fridays, we had a number of people out who got to learn wool spinning on drop spindles. We hope everyone is very pleased with how much progress they made and how much they learned.
Our last day of Fibre Fridays was a huge success with so many friendly faces out to help us dye wool. It is amazing how many different colours can be achieved with only one type of plant. The rainbow dye pot was also amazing and fascinating to watch the colours mix. Huge thanks to everyone who came out to our Fibre Friday events and helped make them such a success.

Next up in our list of exciting August events was Painting for Pride. This was done on Tuesday of Central Alberta Pride Week. We had a wonderful group of community members who came out and helped us paint tables.

Canada Day 2017 was a very busy day with arts and crafts, games, a petting zoo, wagon rides, costume portraits, and of course museum tours. We were very fortunate to have lovely Zap! theatre actors bring some historic Lacombe figures back to life.

Lacombe Days 2017 was a fun-filled weekend with all sorts of family events! Saturday was a very busy day with the parade passing right by the museum, after the parade people came to the museum for crafts games, refreshments, tours, and of course our chalk mural competition. We had many very talented and fun people enter this year, thank you to all who participated.

Over the summer we've had many events and excitements! The first event we held was The Parklet Party. During the party there was great food, games and awesome people! The kids really enjoyed the games as they chalked up the sidewalks, threw rings on bottles, and played ping pong.

On July 23rd we had the opening reception for our new WW1 exhibit. The night was filled with speeches, tea leaf readings, and tours of the wonderful exhibit. Come down to the Flatiron Museum & Interpretive Centre to view the exhibit!

We started off Lacombe Days with our pancake breakfast, many people showed up and the food was fantastic! Then it was onto the parade which some of our summer students dressed up and rode in the parade!

We had our gift shop table at the Community Market this summer. The smell of the food trucks and snack vendors made it difficult to sit there without buying something. But once the music in the park started it was easier to sit there and just listen to the music. There was a bouncy Castle for the kids there so when the parents were shopping at the vendors the kids were never bored. It was a great family event every Wednesday.

Over the summer we offered walking tours of downtown/murals at 2pm daily starting at the Michener House Museum. The 45 minute tour included history of the buildings, the stories behind the murals, why downtown is brick and all sorts of little facts about Lacombe.

The visitor rates of all three museums raised substantially this summer, it was great to see everybody coming into the museums. This just shows how more people are interested in local history.

Before the summer was over we had our final summer event which was at Summerland Leisure Park. We had all sorts of fun running this event as there was crafts, a dunk tank, face painting, fingernail painting and much more! The kids were all smiles running around doing all of the activities.
