35 hrs/ week: 9:00am to 5:00pm Monday to Friday

Position Type:                                   Permanent, Full-Time

Function:        This full-time position reports to the Board of the Lacombe & District Historical Society.

Duties and Responsibilities:
· Directs, oversees and manages the operations of the historical society and the Museums located in Lacombe, AB.
· Assists the Board with long-term Financial and Strategic Planning.
· Develops and implements a balanced annual operating budget and provides monthly financial reporting.
· Responsible for Curatorial work, Exhibits, Programming, Collections Management, Communications, Publications, Marketing, Events and Fundraising.
· Responsible for Fund Development, Grant Writing and Government reporting.
· Prepares and presents annual reports and funding requests to the elected Councils of the City of Lacombe and Lacombe County.
· Represents the Lacombe Region at Provincial and Federal Conferences.
· Builds and maintains relationships with stakeholders and partners.
· Responsible for hiring, training and supervising all staff and volunteers.
· Responsible for the upkeep, maintenance, content of the museum website and social media platforms.
· Responsible for fostering and growing institution’s impact and public engagement
· Responsible for maintaining and/or renewing museum accreditation (AMA) and heritage designations
· Supervises all projects for the organization
· Represents the historical society on the Lacombe Regional Tourism Board and City of Lacombe Heritage Resources Committee
· Represents the historical society at industry meetings and events

Qualifications:
                                                           
  • Degree/ Diploma in Museum Studies, History, Fine Arts, Humanities or related field
  • Ability to develop and work within a budget
  • Knowledge of the Alberta Museum Association’s Standards and Guidelines for Museum Practices
  • Knowledge of Past Perfect 5.0 Collections Management Software
  • Experience in a management and supervisory role
  • Experience in planning (long term and short term)
  • Customer Service, public relations and communications experience
  • Experience working with non-profits, community and/or government organizations
  • Grant writing experience
  • Experience with social media and websites
  • Comfortable learning new technologies
  • Knowledge of marketing and communications
  • Minimum three years’ work experience at a Museum, Cultural Organization and/or Archives


Special Conditions of Employment:

Performance Review:                      After 3 months of employment and every 12 months thereafter.

Remuneration:                                  $62,953 - $78,678
Commensurate with experience. The Lacombe & District Historical Society provides a benefits package that includes health and dental insurance.

Archives Assistants (Summer Students)

Job Description


The Archives Assistant will undertake work that assists the Lacombe and District Historical Society in meeting its mission to collect, preserve and interpret the culture and heritage of the Lacombe region.
The Archives Assistant will work with the Lacombe and District Historical Society and the City of Lacombe to grow and advance the mutually beneficial Municipal Heritage Resources program.

Typical duties include:
·         Updating records and creating a database for Heritage Homes in the City of Lacombe.
·         Researching heritage homes and heritage home maintenance best practices
·         Assist City of Lacombe's Heritage resources committee as needed and other duties related to the furthering and advancing of the Society’s mission
The Archives Assistant will also help deliver programs and events at the Museums for special events such as Canada Day and Lacombe Days.

Requirements Include

Candidates must meet the eligibility criteria of the Canada Summer Jobs program.
·        Physically fit and able to manipulate and move items weighing up to 40 lbs, ability to climb stairs, and ability to sit and work at a computer for longer periods of time is required
·         Preference may be given to those with previous heritage work experience or education/training, museum education/training, planning or records management work experience/training
·         Familiarity with municipal government and the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act is considered an asset
·         Possess excellent oral and written communication skills in English
·         Possess excellent attention to detail
·         Excellent organization skills are required
·         Ability to represent the Society in a professional, competent manner
·         Work in a multiple task environment
·         Proficient with the Microsoft Office suite of products, including Access
·         Ability to work co-operatively as part of a team
Wage is $15/hour, the term is between June 28th and August 30th for a total of 240 hours.

The Website Development Intern will assist with the final stages of development 
of a new website for the Lacombe museums including finalizing design, content, 
layout, and site navigation. Specifically, they will assist with finishing the design 
of www.lacombemuseum.com and adding content about the museum's programs, 
collections and virtual exhibits. Using common Wordpress and sitebuilder templates, 
the intern will assist the museum in sharing the history and heritage of the Lacombe 
region online -helping the museum in its mission to raise awareness and provide 
access to Lacombe's history.

The successful candidate will work an average of 5-10 hours a week for a total of 
70 hours. Hours are flexible.

This is an unpaid position. A certificate is provided to the candidate upon successful 
completion of the internship.

Their duties include; welcoming and providing local tourism information to visitors, delivering guided tours and programs, creating and updating online content, and working in the archives.



Candidates must meet the eligibility criteria of the Young Canada Works Student/ Canada Summer job programs. Ideal candidates include post-secondary students pursuing studies in a related field and/or wanting to pursue a career in the culture and heritage and/or non-profit sectors. Strong customer service, computer and communications skills are required. Knowledge of any related heritage skills like spinning, knitting, and/or blacksmithing is an asset.

Due to the historic nature of our buildings, access to these buildings is limited and not wheel chair accessible. Ability to do some lifting (up to 50lbs) and climb stairs is also required.

Summer Collections Intern - Serving Communities Internship Program

The Collections Intern(s) will assist with collections management projects at the Lacombe & District Historical Society. Specifically, they will be trained by the Museum's Director to learn cataloging procedures (document, describe, label, and store artefacts) and work hands on with artefacts donated to the museum and de-accessioned in 2017. One intern will specifically work towards de-accessioning 35 artefacts. Two interns will specifically work towards accessioning 20 intakes/or approximately 70 artefacts. The interns will all work hands on with museum artefacts in the collection. This work will assist the museum in meeting its mission to collect, preserve and interpret the culture and heritage of the Lacombe region. The students will learn how to work in a museum and archives environment (museum and archives policy and procedure) in addition to developing writing, research and oral communications skills. Each student will work an average of 7 hours per week for a duration of approximately ten weeks and complete a total of approximately 70 hours.

Student Eligibility

To participate in the Serving Communities Internship Program (SCiP) and receive a $1000 award at the end of your SCiP internship, you must meet the following requirements. Before you apply for an internship, please carefully review the eligibility criteria to confirm that you qualify for SCiP.

NOTE: If you do not qualify but complete a SCiP internship anyway, the $1000 award will not be awarded.

Eligibility Criteria
You must be a post-secondary student living in Alberta.

You must be a Canadian Citizen, Permanent Resident, or an international student with appropriate authorization as may be required from Citizenship and Immigration Canada to participate in SCiP. Currently, this is a valid study permit. (Up to 10% of SCiP internships can be filled by international students.)

During the academic year in which you begin your internship, you must have attended one of the 26 publicly-funded post-secondary institutions in Alberta.

You must be a part time or full time student in a degree, diploma, certificate, or graduate studies program at an eligible institution. Open studies, non-credit, upgrading, or continuing education students do not qualify.

You must be registered in and attending at least one class at an institution during the academic year in which you begin your internship (August 1st – July 31st) and you must be able to provide proof of enrolment indicating this. Please note, an acceptance letter, either conditional or full, from a post-secondary institution does not qualify you for the program until you have begun attending at least one class.

You are only able to receive one SCiP award per academic year (August 1st – July 31st).

You may not receive compensation other than the SCiP award for a SCiP internship. This includes a wage or honorarium.

You may not use a SCiP internship to meet an academic requirement or receive school credit. This includes using a SCiP internship for a course placement or practicum.

In order for an internship to qualify for an award, all internships must be approved by SCiP and be submitted by an eligible nonprofit organization.

The Exhibits Intern will assist with exhibit development projects at the Lacombe & District Historical Society. Specifically, they will be trained by the Museum's Director to learn exhibit making procedures (research, writing, display creation).

The intern will work towards an exhibit about local First Nations (Treaty 6) history in the Lacombe region.

The interns may complete their work on site at the museum or at home, or at the library as much of it can be done on a computer and involves the use of internet research databases (such as Provincial and National Archives). This work will assist the museum in meeting its mission to collect, preserve and interpret the culture and heritage of the Lacombe region. The student will learn how to work in a museum and archives environment (museum and archives policy and procedure) in addition to developing writing, research and communications skills.

The student will work an average of 7 hours per week for a duration of approximately ten weeks and complete a total of approximately 70 hours.
